Scanning tunneling spectroscopy with superconducting tips of Al

چکیده
We present Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy measurements at 0.1 K using tips made of Al. At zero field, the atomic lattice and charge density wave of 2H-NbSe2 are observed, and under magnetic fields the peculiar electronic surface properties of vortices are precisely resolved. The tip density of states is influenced by the local magnetic field of the vortex, providing for a new probe of the magnetic field at nanometric sizes.

Vacuum tunneling of superconducting quasiparticles from atomically sharp scanning tunneling microscope tips
We report on the study of atomically sharp superconducting tips for scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The results clearly show vacuum tunneling of superconducting quasiparticles from atomically sharp tips. Observed deviations of the energy gap of the superconducting tip from its bulk value are attributed to the proximity effect. We show that a combination of a superconducting tip ...
متن کاملA 30 mK, 13.5 T scanning tunneling microscope with two independent tips.
We describe the design, construction, and performance of an ultra-low temperature, high-field scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with two independent tips. The STM is mounted on a dilution refrigerator and operates at a base temperature of 30 mK with magnetic fields of up to 13.5 T. We focus on the design of the two-tip STM head, as well as the sample transfer mechanism, which allows in situ t...
متن کاملScanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Bi2Sr2CuO61d: New Evidence for the Common Origin of the Pseudogap and Superconductivity
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we investigated the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle density of states of overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6+δ between 275 mK and 82 K. Below Tc=10K, the spectra show a gap with well-defined coherence peaks at ±Δp≃12meV, which disappear at Tc. Above Tc, the spectra display a clear pseudogap of the same magnitude, gradually filling up and vanishing at T∗≃68K. ...
متن کاملFabrication and characterization of scanning tunnelingmicroscopy superconducting Nb tips having highly enhanced critical fields
We report a simple method for the fabrication of Niobium superconducting (SC) tips for scanning tunnelling microscopy which allow atomic resolution. The tips, formed in-situ by the mechanical breaking of a niobium wire, reveal a clear SC gap of 1.5 meV and a critical temperature Tc =9.2±0.3 K, as deduced from Superconductor Insulator Normal metal (NIS) and Superconductor Insulator Superconducto...
متن کاملCharacterization of tungsten tips for STM by SEM/AES/XPS
For the first time, both X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) techniques were applied in analysis of surface contamination of electrochemically etched Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tungsten tips. Carbon monoxide, graphite, tungsten carbide and tungsten oxide were found as main surface contaminations of STM tungsten tips. The thickness of tungsten ox...
